About Detroit, Michigan

The largest city in the State of Michigan, Detroit is often referred to as “Motor City” or “Motown”.  Home to the Big Three automakers, Detroit is situated on the Great Lake Michigan and is about one mile from Canadian border in Windsor, Ontario.

Major corporations headquartered in Detroit include Hummer, Saturn, GMC, General Motors, GMAC, Faygo, DeLorean Motors, Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and Avis Rent-a-Car. The nation’s struggling economy has greatly affected Detroit due to the stressed auto industry, but the city is working to diversify its economic portfolio by adding industries in biotechnology and information technology, among many others. Its tourism lures are apparent, and visitors won’t find a shortage of enriching things to do in the city.

Visitors and residents love to see live music concerts at the DTE Energy Music Theater and the Palace at Auburn Hills. The Theater District, which hosts bountiful live Broadway shows and plays, features seven venues including the Fox Theatre, Detroit Opera House, Fisher Theater and Music Hall.

Gamble and relax at the MGM Grand Resort and Casino, browse the Motown Historical Museum, enjoy the Detroit People Mover Scenic Railroad, visit the Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American History, enjoy fresh produce and delicious food at the Eastern Market and entertain your curiosity at the New Detroit Science Center.

Detroit also boasts a diverse culinary portfolio. Famous local restaurants include The Whitney, Giovanni’s Ristorante, Big Fish, The Rattlesnake Club and the Rochester Chop House. Ethnic foods are certainly not in short supply here.

Famous Detroiters include actor Tim Allen, actresses Kristen Bell and Selma Blair, Aretha Franklin, Henry Ford, Sonny Bono, Casey Kasem and Charles Lindbergh, among many others.
