Polish Village Cafe: Old world flavor and friendly service

May 13, 2010

The Polish Village Cafe, located in the city of Hamtramck, is a long-time Detroit institution that prides itself on authentic Polish food, friendly service and the kind of atmosphere where "everyone knows your name."

This tiny eatery may be small, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in presence and flavor. This affordable restaurant is the perfect place to come for a big plate of comfort food like your grandma used to make. Bring your friends, family or coworkers, sit back and relax in The Polish Village Cafe's laid-back atmosphere.

Since 1976, The Polish Village Cafe has been serving locals hearty dishes with recipes taken straight from the Polish old country. Traditional favorites like ghoulash, perch, schnitzels, pierogi and kielbasa are available and are some of the most popular items on The Polish Cafe's extensive menu.

Try the Golabki-- beef and rice-stuffed cabbage rolls with tomato sauce and mashed potatoes; Watrobka Z Kury-- pan-fried chicken livers with onions; Zrazy-- ham, pickle and onion-stuffed sirloins; or the Polsky Talerz-- a Polish sampler plate featuring stuffed cabbage rolls, pierogies, kielbasa, sauerkraut and mashed potatoes.

Several pierogi flavors are available. If you are looking for something savory, try the potato and cheese, sauerkraut or meat-stuffed varieties. For something sweeter, try the delicious sweet cheese, blueberry or strawberry-stuffed varieties.

Soup choices include traditional Polish recipes like duck blood and tripe, along with a soup of the day, which is usually beef vegetable, chicken noodle or potato.

For a lighter appetite, try the liverwurst sandwich on toasted rye bread with onions and mustard-- it's a real favorite around here.
