Mexican Town Restaurant: Authentic Mexican in Detroit
May 13, 2010
There is always a fiesta happening at Detroit's Mexican Town Restaurant. There is just something about the vibrant, colorful interior and huge, fruity margaritas that just seems to make everything a little bit loco.
Despite the fact that this landmark Mexican eatery is near the Canadian border, you'd think you traveled the southern border of the United States instead. From the sounds of the mariachi music to the friendly, amiable staff, stopping in for a meal at Mexican Town Restaurant is almost like a mini-vacation to Mexico.
To start off your Mexican Town experience, try one of their signature appetizers. The Botana Supreme is a popular app choice that features warm corn chips piled high with refried beans, Mexican sausage, ground beef, sour cream, melted cheese and tomatoes, onions, avocados, peppers and olives. Can you say yum?
Other muy deliciouso app choices include the Hongos Flameados, a combination of mushrooms, Mexican sausage, spicy sauce and melty cheese and tortillas for dipping, mini flautas with shredded beef and a variety of dipping sauces, and a delightful calamari and octopus salad that is served on a bed of fresh garden greens.
Entree choices include familiar items like burritos, tacos (corn and flour varieties), tostadas, quesadillas, stuffed poblano peppers, Mexican pork and beef stews, and spicy chorizo dishes with items like eggs and beans. If you're in the mood for something really exotic, try the cactus and eggs platter, which is served with tomatoes, onions and peppers. If you're a seafood lover, try the cactus and shrimp instead (or the seafood chimichanga-- it's amazing). Mexican Town is also known for its delicious hand-made tamales.
A children's menu with kid-friendly items like cheesy quesadillas and soft flour beef taco with rice and beans is available for little ones.
Each Monday, and Friday evenings inside the bar, Canadian money is honored at par. For extra savings, visit the restaurant during these times.
Seating can be limited on weekends, so reservations are highly recommended.
