El Wood Bar and Grill: Legendary Local Eats
Feb 7, 2010
Originally located at the corner of Elizabeth Street and Woodward Avenue, there is no question where El Wood Grill obtained its name. Constructed in 1936 by famous architect Charles Noble, El Wood Grill is a casual eatery with a noticeably art-deco look and feel that is distinct to the city of Detroit. The building was moved to East Adams Avenue in 1997 by its owner, Chuck Forbes, but the famous diner retained its familiar name-- a good choice, because customers certainly wouldn't have it any other way.
Just feet from Comerica Park and Ford Field, this popular restaurant is a hot spot before and after Detroit sporting events. Frequenters flock to El Wood for reasonably-priced eats that are simple, delicious and fresh-- along with the company of good friends and refreshing, icy-cold brew.
To start your El Wood experience, be sure to try the grilled chicken nachos with jalapenos, cheddar cheese, sour cream, lettuce, tomato and leeks with spicy salsa, or a bowl of El Wood chili, which is made fresh daily.
Among the salad choices are the Cajun Salmon Filet with romaine, cucumbers, tomatoes and pita points; El Wood Cobb with bacon, avocado, blue cheese and diced grilled chicken breast; and the Maurice, which includes ham, turkey, Swiss cheese, sweet pickles and boiled egg slices.
El Wood's versatile sandwich menu features nearly two-dozen mouth-watering varieties that will please even the pickiest of palates. The BBQ pulled pork sandwich with melted cheddar, ham and turkey reuben with Swiss and kraut, and grilled chicken BLT with cheddar cheese are among the favorites of El Wood frequenters.
Mini fish sandwiches, all-beef hot dogs, tilapia fingers and pork riblet baskets are among the other El Wood choices.
Be sure to end your El Wood meal with an old-fashioned hot fudge sundae.
